The Openings: Where Embers Actually Get Into a Texas House
Clearing brush is the visible half of wildfire work. The other half is a short list of openings in the building itself, starting with the fact that the screen your code required is sized to stop rodents, not embers.
The version of wildfire preparation that circulates in Central Texas neighborhoods is a vegetation story. Clear the brush. Cut the cedar back. Get the woodpile off the porch. All of that is real work and worth doing, and the zone-by-zone guide covers it.
But it is the half of the job you can see from the street. The other half is a short, boring list of openings in the building itself, and the reason it gets skipped is that most of the items are two inches wide and up under an eave.
Texas A&M Forest Service puts the problem plainly: embers are "flaming bits of debris coming from the fire that can travel one to two miles in certain weather conditions," and "a high intensity fire can produce a literal blizzard of embers, sometimes traveling more than a mile before landing." The agency's own summary is that embers "can pose one of the greatest threats to a home, sometimes more than the approaching wildfire."
An ember that lands on gravel does nothing. The question is whether your house offers it anywhere better to land.
The screen on your vents was sized for rats
This is the single most useful thing on the page, and almost nobody knows it.
Attic and crawl space vents on a typical house are screened to satisfy the building code, and the code's concern there is animals. The Forest Service's Firewise fact sheet on attic and crawl space vents describes the standard requirement as "corrosion resistant metal screens, which are typically 1/4-inch to keep out rodents."
Then the part that matters: "embers can pass through 1/4-inch mesh and ignite combustible materials, particularly smaller materials such as saw dust."
So the screen is doing the job it was specified for. It was simply never specified for this one. The recommendation for wildfire-prone areas is 1/8-inch metal mesh, which the fact sheet says "effectively minimizes the entry of embers," and the Forest Service's fire-resistant construction guidance repeats it as "install 1/8-inch metal screening behind vents."
The honest caveat comes from the same fact sheet, and it is worth reading twice: "1/8-inch screening only minimizes the size and number of embers and does not eliminate them entirely; making it very important to reduce what's stored in the attic and crawl space."
That is a different instruction than "screen your vents." It says the screen reduces the load and what is on the other side of the screen decides the outcome. The fact sheet is specific about the risk: people store "cardboard boxes, old clothes and other combustible materials" in exactly these spaces, "because embers accumulate against them and they can be easily ignited."
Cleaning out the attic is wildfire work. It does not look like wildfire work.
Do not seal a vent
Before the list, the tradeoff, because this one has a way of going wrong when a homeowner gets motivated on a Saturday.
Vents are not decoration. The Forest Service fact sheet is explicit that attic and crawl space vents "serve important functions, including providing ventilation to remove unwanted moisture from these typically unoccupied spaces and oxygen for gas appliances such as hot water heaters and furnaces."
Screening a vent is a change to the vent. Blocking one is a change to the building. Trapped moisture in an attic is its own slow problem, and an opening that supplies combustion air to a gas appliance is not yours to close. Finer mesh also clogs more readily than coarse mesh, which is why "clean vents to keep them free of debris" sits right next to the screening advice in the Forest Service's construction guidance.
Screen, keep clear, and leave the airflow alone.
The walk-around list
Take a phone and a notebook. You are counting and photographing, not fixing.
Every vent, by name. Gable, ridge, soffit and eave, foundation and crawl space, dryer, and any utility penetration. Most people underestimate the count by half. Note the mesh size on each one, and note the ones you cannot see behind.
Eaves and soffits. The Forest Service guidance is to "enclose or box-in eaves with non-combustible materials such as metal, cement board, or stucco." An open eave is a pocket that catches hot air and anything travelling in it. A soffit panel out of its channel is not a small cosmetic issue; it is a hole into the attic.
Roof gaps. "Inspect for gaps in roofing that can expose roof decking or supports," and "place angle flashing over openings between the roof decking and fascia board." The roof edge is where the covering, the deck, and the fascia meet, which is to say it is where the gaps are.
Gutters and roof debris. The construction guidance is to "install metal gutters and gutter guards to keep debris from accumulating." Colorado State Forest Service's home ignition zone checklist states the maintenance half in one line: "remove all leaves, needles and other debris from all decks, roofs and gutters." Debris in a gutter is fine fuel held against the roof edge, at the exact junction described above.
Under the deck. Gravel or other noncombustible material underneath, and "screen in the bottom of the deck with metal 1/8-inch screening." An open deck frame is an upside-down chimney with kindling stored in it, and the stored kindling is usually the actual problem: paint cans, lumber offcuts, a bag of mulch.
The fence where it meets the wall. "Separate wooden fences from the house with a stone or metal barrier." A wooden fence running to a wall is a fuse leading somewhere. Colorado's checklist puts the same idea as a distance: "replace combustible fencing or gates, at least within 5 feet of the home."
Windows. "Install double-paned or tempered-glass windows." Glass that fails from radiant heat turns a closed house into an open one, and everything above becomes moot.
The first five feet does structural work too
The vegetation guidance for the band closest to the house is not only about plants. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety describes the 0 to 5 foot noncombustible zone as covering the ground "around a building, including the entire footprint of an attached deck," and explains what it is for: the zone "is designed to protect the building from ignition that can result from wind-blown embers that can accumulate at the base of the exterior wall."
Accumulate is the operative word. Embers do not arrive one at a time and they do not distribute evenly. They pile up where wind slows down, which is against walls, in inside corners, along the base of a fence, and in the gutter. IBHS frames the overall mechanism as "a complex mix of ember attack and direct flame exposure," and the first five feet is where those two mechanisms meet.
IBHS is also candid that the 0 to 5 foot rule as currently defined rests substantially on expert judgment, which is why they have research underway to test it. Treat it as good practice with a stated basis, not as a settled number.
Which makes the first five feet the one band where the vegetation list and the openings list are the same list. Doormats, plastic bins, patio cushions, the recycling, a bag of potting soil against the wall, and the mulch bed under the window all sit inside it.
What to write down
None of this requires a contractor to observe. It requires someone to walk the perimeter once and record what is there:
- The count and location of every vent, and the mesh size on each.
- Whether eaves are open or boxed, and in what material.
- The condition of the roof edge, fascia, and flashing.
- What is in the gutters, and on what date you looked.
- What is stored under the deck, against the walls, and in the attic.
- Where any combustible fence or gate meets the structure.
