Cedar Near the House: What Central Texas Gets Right and Wrong About Ashe Juniper

Ashe juniper has a reputation as the most flammable thing in the Hill Country. The county's own wildfire plan tells a more careful story: mature juniper is relatively fire resistant, young dense juniper is not, and cutting a tree down is not automatically the right answer.

Everyone in Central Texas knows the line. Cedar is a gas can. Cedar is what burns. If you have cedar near the house, take it out.

The trees in question are mostly Ashe juniper (Juniperus ashei), which almost nobody here calls a juniper, and the reputation is not baseless. But the version of it that circulates at neighborhood meetings is missing the part that actually determines whether a particular tree in a particular yard is a problem. The 2026 City of Austin and Travis County Community Wildfire Protection Plan says it more carefully, and the careful version is more useful.

Two different questions that get collapsed into one

Start here, because almost every argument about which plants are "flammable" comes from mixing these up.

Ignitability is how easily something catches. It is about how little energy it takes to get a fuel going.

Flame length and intensity are about how much heat comes out once it is burning, and how tall the flames get.

These are independent, and the CWPP treats them as two separate axes. Something can be extremely easy to light and produce almost no heat. Something else can be hard to light and burn ferociously once it goes.

Look at what that does to the usual Hill Country list:

The dry grass along your fence line is the easiest thing on your property to ignite, and it is also the shortest-flame fuel on the list. It will catch from an ember almost instantly and race across open ground with flames of a few feet. The juniper thicket at the back of the lot is harder to get going and, once it does, produces the tall, high-intensity fire the maps flag.

Both matter. They matter differently, and in different places on the property.

The part about cedar that gets left out

Here is the sentence from the county's plan that changes the picture:

Mature Ashe juniper is relatively fire-resistant; young juniper is fire-intolerant.

And the qualifier attached to it: Ashe juniper is relatively fire resistant under normal conditions, but extreme drought, dense surrounding vegetation, and accumulated leaf litter sharply raise its intensity and crown fire potential.

Read that as what it is: a condition-dependent flip, not a fixed species trait. The same species, in two different states, sits on opposite ends of the range. A mature, well-spaced, healthy juniper with clear ground beneath it behaves very differently from a stand of young ones grown together into a continuous thicket with years of dropped needles underneath.

That is why "cedar is a gas can" is unhelpful advice. It is a statement about a species, and the thing that actually predicts behavior is condition, density, moisture, and what is on the ground below.

The plan has a name for the bad version. It calls it aggrading juniper shrub: dense thickets of Ashe juniper mixed with eastern red cedar, live oak and honey mesquite, where biomass has built up in the absence of fire, the canopy has closed, and litter has accumulated. That land cover is about 10% of the planning area, roughly 66,800 acres. Closed juniper woodland is another 17%.

A single mature juniper thirty feet from the house is a different object from a closed thicket, and the difference is visible from your own yard.

The tradeoff nobody mentions

There is a second complication, and it comes from the Texas A&M Forest Service rather than the plan: removing a tree for fire reasons trades against wind and heat exposure.

A tree near a structure is doing several jobs at once. It is shading a wall and a roof through Texas summers. It may be breaking wind that would otherwise hit the house directly, which matters in a state where windstorms and hail are the more frequent event by a wide margin. Take it out and you have reduced one exposure and increased others.

This is not an argument against removal. Sometimes removal is exactly right, and in the first five feet around a structure it usually is. It is an argument against removal as a reflex. A recommendation that says "remove the tree" with no reference to what the tree is doing, how far it is from the wall, what condition it is in, and what else that side of the house faces is an oversimplified recommendation, and acting on it can leave a home worse off across the full set of risks it actually faces.

The honest framing is that this is a tradeoff to be made deliberately, with the specific tree and the specific wall in view, and not a rule to be applied to every juniper on the lot.

What to look at, by distance

The useful way to think about vegetation is not species-first. It is distance-first, then condition, then species. Distance is the variable doing the most work.

The first five feet. This is the zone where the standard is strictest and where the reasoning is simplest: anything here that catches will be in direct contact with the structure. The guidance is to keep it noncombustible. Gravel, bare mineral soil, hardscape, low succulents, well-watered herbaceous plants. This is the one place where "yes, take the juniper out" is close to a general rule, and where a woodpile, a doormat, or a plastic bin against the wall matters as much as any plant.

Five to thirty feet. The goal here is breaking continuity, not clearing everything. Space the vegetation so fire cannot run from one plant to the next to the wall. Well-spaced live oak, mountain laurel, and yaupon are reasonable neighbors in this band. Continuous juniper is not, and a continuous mat of dry grass is not either. Think about the gaps as much as the plants.

Thirty to a hundred feet, and further on a slope. Thin, remove dead material, reduce density. You are not clearing this zone, you are making sure it cannot carry a crown fire straight to the house. This is also where the aggrading thicket problem usually lives, and where a mature well-spaced juniper is genuinely fine.

The field assessment standard the county used weights defensible space at the maximum: more than 100 feet scores best, less than 30 feet around the structure scores worst, and that variable is tied with the roof as the heaviest single factor on the form. Distance really is where the leverage sits.

Three plants worth knowing by name

Beyond juniper, three that come up constantly in Central Texas yards and that the plan names specifically as invasive:

Giant reed (Arundo donax). Tall, dense, grows in creek bottoms and drainage easements, ignites readily and burns hot. It is invasive, it forms continuous stands, and it likes exactly the low wet corridors that run behind a lot of Hill Country properties.

Privet, in three varieties (glossy, Chinese, and waxleaf Ligustrum). Extremely common as an escaped ornamental, forms dense understory, adds fuel load beneath the canopy. Often mistaken for a harmless hedge.

King Ranch bluestem. A fast-spreading cured grass, named in the plan among the fine fuels that carry fire quickly across open ground. Very high ignitability, low flame length, exactly the profile discussed above.

All three increase fuel loads and change how fire moves through a property, and all three are things a homeowner can identify and address without touching a mature tree.

Look at your own yard, not at a species list

The short version of everything above:

  • Distance from the structure matters more than species.
  • Condition and density matter more than species.
  • A dense thicket is the problem; a spaced mature tree usually is not.
  • Fine dry grass is the easiest thing to ignite and the easiest thing to fix.
  • Removing a tree has costs in wind and heat, so decide deliberately.

None of that can be resolved from a list, because the answer depends on what is actually growing where, in what condition, at what distance from which wall. It is a property question, and the only way to answer it is to look at the property and write down what is there.
